Equipment Used

The equipment we have used over the year’s has changed and evolved quite a bit. There is even a generational difference in the equipment that each of us has used. Ray only uses film camera’s and Steve only uses digital cameras. Even the computer equipment we use reflects our different generations, Ray uses most MAC computers while Steve uses only Windows computers.

Because of the type of equipment we each use we also travel in different ways.

Since Ray has so many different brands of cameras each with their own type of film and lens required he tends to travel with multiple camera setups. Because of this he can’t carry all of his equipment on a plane, so he usually checks his camera gear. But, this does allow him some additional flexibly when deciding what gear to bring.

Steve on the other hand uses only digital Nikon equipment. As a result he only uses a photo backpack and always brings his gear as carryon luggage. But, this limits his flexibility for his gear and requires a major decision be made prior to the trip as to exactly what gear is going. So he likes his gear to be a little more flexible, hence him only owning Nikon equipment that is fully interchangeable.

Most professional photographers who submit their work for publication shoot transparency film, or slide film. My work is not published and I do my own printing in my own photographic studio.

I print only from negatives because I believe that negatives produce the highest quality images, especially for big enlargements. My studio is in my home. Since I print only from negatives I shoot only negative film. My forte is strong colorful images with bold bright colors. I have found that amateur films do a better job of capturing the bold ‘Ray Doan Look’. Professional films the tend toward more delicate or subtle colors.

My choice for 120 and 220 film is FujiColor – ASA 400. For 35mm my mainstay film is regular old Kodak Gold 400.
